Arthur Probsthain is a local independent family run bookshop which has a history of over a hundred years.

For many years our reputation was for the vast library of books from all over the world piled from the floor to the ceiling, from corner to corner.

Since the turn of the century we have been slowing changing and are now a colourful mix of interesting books, music and art.

Tea and Tattle is a traditional tea room but with a modern cultural twist.

We provide a mix of a 'Traditional Afternoon Tea Menu' with a more modern approach all set in the backdrop of a creative blend of traditional and modern Chinese / English décor.

It is located in the basement underneath the bookshop, which was once a treasure trove of thousands of books built up over the years (more of that in our history section).

We stock a selection of great classics and also new books which have just been published. Each country or subject is separated which makes it an enjoyable browse. At our main branch we focus on art, (painting, architecture, ceramics, etc) music, film, religion, languages, literature and culture from China, Japan, South-east Asia, The Middle East, Africa, India and South Asia.

Our gallery space is perfect to enjoy our changing display of different Oriental & African art!
